How Lumi works
Photo to Calendar: Turn a School Flyer Into Family Calendar Events
September 15, 2026 · 5 min read · The Lumi Team
The fridge is a filing system. Picture day, the spring concert, the dentist card, the soccer schedule with fourteen Saturdays on it. Every one of those pieces of paper is a date somebody has to notice, type into a calendar, and remember to tell the other parent about. That somebody is usually you.
Photo-to-calendar is the feature that ends the typing. In Lumi you photograph the paper, and the dates land on the shared family calendar — with the document filed so you can find it again in March.
How it works in Lumi
- Open Lumi and tap the capture button, then choose the camera or your photo library.
- Snap the flyer, schedule, card, or screenshot. One page at a time works best.
- Lumi reads it and shows you what it found: each event with a name, date, time, and who it's for.
- Review, fix anything it misread, and confirm. The events go onto the family calendar and the photo is filed under Documents.
You confirm before anything is saved. Lumi never adds events to your calendar silently — the review step is where you correct a smudged time or assign the right kid.
What it reads well
- School flyers and newsletters with a handful of dates.
- Sports and activity schedules laid out as a list or grid.
- Appointment cards from the dentist, doctor, or orthodontist.
- Prescriptions and receipts — filed as documents, with any dates pulled out.
- Screenshots of a text from the coach or an email from the teacher.
Where it needs your help
Photos of handwriting, glare across a laminated page, or a schedule that only says "Tuesdays" with no month will get you a draft rather than a finished answer. That's what the review step is for. The best photos are straight-on, well lit, and one page per shot.
Why it belongs in a family planner, not just a calendar
A stand-alone photo-to-calendar tool gets dates into a calendar. Lumi puts them into the same place as the rest of the household: the event lands on the shared calendar, the flyer is filed, the "bring a white t-shirt" line becomes a task with an owner, and your partner sees all of it without you forwarding anything. The paper pile and the mental load were always the same problem.
About the AI and your photos
Reading a photo uses Lumi's AI, which is off until you turn it on. Nothing is sent to our AI provider until you use an AI feature, your photos are never used to train AI models, and we never sell your data. The full details are in our privacy policy.
Questions people ask
Is there an app that turns a photo of a school flyer into calendar events?+
Yes. Lumi for iPhone photographs a flyer, schedule, or appointment card, extracts each date and time, lets you review it, and adds the events to your shared family calendar with the document filed.
Can it read a whole season's sports schedule?+
Yes, as long as the schedule is photographed clearly and one page at a time. You'll see every game as a separate event to review before it's saved.
Does my partner see the events too?+
Yes. Lumi is a shared household planner — a partner who joins with your invite code sees the same calendar, tasks, and documents.
Does photo-to-calendar work with Apple Calendar?+
Events live on Lumi's shared family calendar. Lumi can also import events from your Apple Calendar so the family view is complete.
